Question:

What is the widest rucksack available to buy?

I need to find an extra wide rucksack that is at least 23 inches wide. This should be the main compartment and not include pockets. I am also looking for a minimum of 25 inches in length and 14 inches depth. The rucksack must also have padded straps, waist belt and offer some sort of back support.

These are my only criteria and I am not bothered about any pockets etc.

I have search around but am unable to find anything this big. I know there are things out there like this as I once saw someone with a rucksack this wide. There are many rucksacks out there that are very high, but just don’t have the width.

If anyone could point me to any links where I could buy such a rucksack I would be very grateful

  1. Not having bought a Rucksack lately I cannot comment on the latest available but having had a large rucksack in the army with the SAS of over fifty years ago, army surplus stores may be able to help you. This was known as 'Bergen' Rucksack. It was fitted on a triangular padded  frame and lay high up between the middle of your shoulders to the base round about your kidneys, this base  fitted round your body nestling on you hip bones, so the weight was spread all over and was so comfortable there were times when you didn't realise that it was on!! the webbing shoulder loops were fitted with a loop on the front so that you could pull at them when climbing a hill.I used then to hold my Tommy gun

I think I saw them in use by the Commandos in the Falklands War.
