What is the word for an animal that can spend its time on both land and water?

I'm doing a project for an AP Biology class and I'm trying to describe the fact that swans are suited for both land and water. But I need a term that can say that. (Hopefully there is such a word... I'm sure I've heard it used somewhere. I just don't know what it is.)

Thank you for the help! :)

  1. i believe it is amphibian but not sure.

  2. Amphibious ...

  3. People, people, people.

Beavers, otters, muskrats, seals, penguins, polar bears, water snakes, etc... are NOT amphibians.  They are mammals, birds, and reptiles.

Amphibians are vertebrates whose young live in water but the adults live on land. Amphibians include frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders.

There is a word to describe both land and sea, but it escapes me at the moment.  It will come to me in a minute....."aqua-terrestial?  no, that's not it......

  4. Amphibians, such as frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, and gymnophiona, are cold-blooded animals that metamorphose from a juvenile, water-breathing form to an adult, air-breathing form.

  5. amphibious(: like those cars in top gear lol xx

  6. 1. swan is aquatik (sumwot).  We dont hav a kommon werd for anamal that spend sum time on land & sum on/in water.

    2. sientists limit werd "amfibian" tu anamals that hafta retern tu water tu breed (zampel=frog).

  7. amphibian

  8. A swan is a water bird. Just as humans can swim and survive in the water so can a water bird. However, amphibian would be a misnomer in this case. Stating that swans are swimmers should convey the idea that they can adapt to being in water.

  9. Amphibians are animals that live both on land and in water.

  10. Amphibian.  :)

Though technically the word is used for animals that live both ON land and IN the water.  A swan wouldn't qualify, but a toad or water snake would.

  11. I believe the word your looking for is Semi-aquatic.  A semi-aquatic animal is one that spends a good portion of it's time in the water, but has to return to the land frequently.  A better example is a penguin or a sea lion.  Both spend most of their time in the water, but has to return to land to breed.

Calling a swan an amphibian will get you a low score on your Bio project.

The only name I know of for animals that group together is "social".  There are many different kinds of groups though, such as herds, pods, packs, eusocial hives, exc.

  12. Amphibious

  13. That is an amphibian.

  14. The word is amphibious.
