  1. The word "quixotic" is a reference to Don Quixote, who embarked on a seemingly impossible journey to live the life of a knight.

    Also, "dreamer" works.

Or "hopeless romantic," if this something is love related.

  2. How about the phrase "Tilting at windmills"? It's from Don Quixote, who thought they were giants or something and kept trying to attack them ("tilt") but they weren't, of course.

  3. Futile, futility

If you mean an idiom, "building castles in the air" or perhaps "like a dog chasing cars when he doesn't know how to drive."

  4. "pie in the sky" springs to mind.

  5. "pipe dream" or "who moved my cheese?"

  6. Sorry to hear that.  But I think it's better to chase something than nothing.  Never know, it might happen.  For example, if I asked Cheryl out, there's a 10% chance she would would go out with me.  If I don't ask her out, there's a 0% chance she will.

The word you're looking for might be "folly," but I'm just saying it might not be folly in reality.
