  1. There is no "best" or "worst" anxiety medicine. Everyone's body is different, and reacts differently to medications. Some people have more side effects than others, and some find certain medications more effective than others. That said, Lexapro is the anti-depressant with the least side-effects. You may have a small increase in anxiety for the first few days, but that will go away quickly, and within two weeks you should start feeling better. If your anxiety is bad, it's probably worth it to hang in there.

Lexapro (escitalopram) is a type of anti-depressant called an "SSRI", a class of drugs that effect the brain chemical serotonin. These drugs are commonly used to treat anxiety as well as depression, as the two conditions seem to be closely related. Other drugs in this class include Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline), and Paxil (paroxetine), and a few others that are less commonly prescribed. In my personal experience, the best SSRI for anxiety is Paxil, but Paxil has worse side effects than Lexapro.

Another group of drugs commonly used to treat anxiety disorders are the benzodiazepines. You've probably heard of some of these, like Xanax, Valium, Ativan, and many others. Xanax (alprazolam) and Ativan (lorazepam) are the two most commonly used to treat anxiety in the short term. They will calm you down very quickly, but they are also addicting, and so they are somewhat dangerous to use.

There are many other types of drugs used to treat anxiety, but those I listed above are the most common. The best course of action is to work with your doctor to figure out what the best medicine for you is. It's trial and error, and you might have to try a few different medicines before you find the right one. If you find yourself having side-effects with Lexapro that you can't tolerate, talk to your doctor as soon as possible to try another medication. Good luck!
