When a gigantic meteor hit earth, destroying 97% of the population, e.g. when the dinosaurs when extinct. But concerning a disaster relevent to human life, probably the San Francisco earthquake or the huge tsunami that hit somewhere in asia a few years ago.

I'm not sure what stormchaser is thinking with the "27,500 dead" being the worst disaster...  The Indian Ocean Tsunami killed almost 300,000 people, and that's not even on the top of the list.

Well according the great science writer Isaac Asimov in his book “A Choice of Catastrophes” the absolute worst class one disaster is judgement day or the end of the universe. Class two ones effecting the earth directly are the sun going nova or collisions with other astral bodies such as asteroids or comets. Class three disasters are again meteor showers, the planet flipping its poles, major earthquake or volcanic events. Also in three are major natural climate changes as when the last ice age ended 10,000 years ago bring us into the current mild inter glacial. Four deals with animal and disease outbreaks. Five deals with population explosions due to mild climates and pollution problems. All of the things in category 4 and 5 can be dealt with by science if it is allowed to do so instead of being prevented for political and commercial profit reason as we currently face.
