  1. In about the 2nd century by the Celts.

  2. You ought to define: discovered by whom and which region you mean!

The first definition of an area called Germania was made by Julius Caesar in his book "Bellum Gallicum" in 51 B.C (east of Gallia on the right shore of river Rhine). Germanic tribes were known before e.g. to the Greek, and the first usage of the word Germani dates back to the roman general Marcus Claudius Marcellus in 222 B.C.

Relics like the Nebra Skydisk indicate that there could have been cultural exchange and trade more than 1500 years earlier.

  3. Seeing as how Neanderthal fossils have been discovered there, it's been inhabited for at least several hundred thousand years.

Germanic tribes go all the way back to pre-Christ times.  (at least 100BC)  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germania

  4. Hope this helps:

Here is a German link too:

Under "Die Entstehung Deutschlands" they say that it's not objectively established when Germany was first an individual nation. There is no clear formation, neither ethical, linguistic or territorial.

(I translated it as good as I could). :-)
