  1. Obviously, as everyone's been saying, it depends on the position you have.  An ambassador would make more than a third secretary, for example.  However, I can make some generalisations.

    Diplomats get paid reasonably well, but not that great compared to the private sector.

    However, when you are posted overseas, you get a lot of non-income benefits, such as free accommodation.

    The US State Dept. has different pay scales depending on whether you work in the USA or in the "Foreign Service."

    There are standard pay ranges for specific job titles.

    Pay (for the US State Dept. anyway) depends on the job title and how long you have worked for the State Dept.

    There are also additional bonuses for "danger pay."

    There may also be a bonus if you are sent someplace really REMOTE (I think they called that "difficulty pay.")
