What is the years of mandatory schooling for children in India?

Question

In the United States, kids can drop out at 16 (about 10th grade). I need to know how many years a child in India must be in school before he/she can drop out.

India has free and compulsory education for children through 14 years of age.  Once a child is 14 they have satisfied all government education requirements and may drop out if they wish.  I suggest reading the article on the website I have listed for sources.
