What is the youngest you can go on a train on your own?

I used to go on the train to go train spotting  in the  60s.  I was aged  11 then.   Nowadays I think maybe 16 would be a safer age to go on your own.   Girls maybe older.

Children can travel by train as long as they have sufficient knowledge of the route, safety considerations, and are capable of knowing what they're doing. Let's face it, school children in some places have no option but to travel by train to school, especially in the more remote parts of the country ! ! !
