What is the zoning that I am looking for? Want to use a lot of land to store cranes and such.?

My family started a business exporting heavy tractors and cranes overseas and want to buy a plot of land to store the inventory. What is the zoning that we want to buy? Can we buy residential (R) and use it for storage instead of building a house?

No you cannot.  It must be zoned commercial and permit outside storage.  Check local zoning ordinances very carefully before buying. Do not attempt a zone change after purchase, residential are very rarely rezoned commercial.

You want Industrial.  Probably Light Industrial since you won't be working on the land; only storing stuff.  If you do work there, get Heavy Industrial.
