Question:

What is there in the Navy for me?

I want to join the Navy after I graduate college and go into a program to become an officer but I was wondering if there was anything for a Psychology/English major. I was a welder for 4 years so if there isn't anything in those fields I know I could make welding work for me but would rather put my degrees to good use.

  1. If you are still in college, try NROTC. I believe you can do it begining in your senior year. GL trying to get a commission AFTER you graduate.

  2. Technically you could do any officer job. As long as you have a degree that's all that matters. You might want to look into public affairs, you'll be able to use your psych degree in helping deal with the public, and the English degree might come in handy with writing press release.

  3. I believe you'd be better of asking what President John F. Kennedy said in his famous addres, "Ask not what your country can do for you, rather ask what you can do for your country."

  4. During my 20 year career, I saw officers with wide varied backgrounds.

When interviewed if you can present a well reasoned logical argument for why your background would make you a good officer; then your 'in'.

Psych is the most common major among sailors studying for their B.A. degree.

  5. Go to thier website. www.navy.com that will help you decide. My son was in for 8 years as a fireman now he is a fereral fireman at 32nd street, on his way to captain ( AT 33) and still in the reserves. And my daughter is inGuam before that italy she is in law enforcement and studying for jag. I am sure there are areas for your specialties. Good luck and thank you. GOD BLESS AMERICA

  6. Being in the Australian Navy for 20 years (first 20 is the hardest!) I would say go for it.

In Aust, all you need is a degree in anything and you can drive Ship's, be a Navigator , then go onto be a Warfare Officer.

But as I am not an Officer (E8), I would say join the real Navy and become a Sailor.  We call our welders specialist's MTM's. Marine Technical Machinist's and they are one of the most sort after and challenging roles.

Get in and see the world. Doesn't matter which Navy you are in, we all breathe the same salty air and see the same spectacular sunrises and sunsets those on land can only dream about.

  7. The Navy is getting picky when it comes to officers. For Psych/ Eng major ? I think you should go NROTC route. You'll have more chance of becoming an Active Duty Officer that way.
