What is there to do at night in Australia?

I'm going to go to Australia next year, probably to Melbourne, and I hear that shops usually close around 5 on weekdays, and that there's not much of a night life. What is there to do to fill up my time?

Melb, Syd, Brisbane all have a nightlife....

being from Australia but currently living in the USA i will tell you yep the shops do close at 5.30 or around that but Melbourne got lots of nightlife city central as well as Carlton st kilda & surrounding suburds then you got the near by beaches or if you were out where i am from NT there is lots of things to do spot lighting rabbits roo,s sitting in your deck chair nice glass of jacobs creek wine on the front or back porch nothing on watching one of the best sun set you will ever see in your life

Well at university/tafes/schools they do events like cheap movies, sporting activities, rock climbing, various social sports and various social activities. Best to check out events on websites that will list what's on - it doesn't have to involve clubbing or spending alot of money

Welcome to Melbourne. I've lived in Melbourne for 16 years and sure theres things to do at night time. You just have to keep updated with special events and night festivals going on. You can keep updated by going to www.thatsmelbourne.com.au. And shops close later on Thursdays and Fridays. Also at night time theres bars and clubs open at night so you'll sure meet a lot of new people. Have fun !

Shops usually do close around 5pm on weekdays in Australia.  One night a week, major centres (Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, etc) will have "late night shopping".  And there is plenty of nightlife - clubs, pubs, shows, movies, restaurants, dance parties, sporting events, concerts, ten pin bowling, etc.  Short of listing specific venues you can go to, that's about the best i can tell you :).

what do you do at home to fill up your time?  do the same thing in australia.  i always think i have nothing to do and always end up doing something.
