Okay I know there is stuff to do but I don't know what. I plan on going on a study abroad trip this June and we have a few days that we can explore for ourselves and I wanted to know what is to see in Syndey, Canberra(if there is anything), Melbourne, and Cairns since these are places that we might get to visit but for a day each. I know this is alot but anybody's help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  2. no

  3. Depends on where you are based......it's a big Country, so if based in Sydney you will have to Fly to Melbourne & Cairns and Brisbane too..........a couple of hours drive will get you to Canberra.

Sydney-- Opera House, Harbour Bridge, The Rocks, all these things you can do in a day, right in the middle of the City.

Canberra-- Architecturally beautiful, Parliament House, the Mint, Australian Library.

    Melbourne-- Markets, Theatre, Fashion.

Cairns-- Great Barrier Reef, Scuba Diving, tropical rainforests, Kuranda markets, Skyrail.

    Brisbane-- I agree...Gold Coast:-Movieworld, Dreamworld etc.

    Hope this helps .....good luck.

  4. The Kuranda Scenic Railway

Our world famous railway experience is a must-do when visiting Cairns and Tropical North Queensland, Australia.

My favourite place in Canberra is the Australian War Memorial.

It is really worth a visit.

    Also in Canberra:

    Old Parliament House

Today, this much-loved heritage building offers the visitor a unique glimpse into Australia's fascinating past.

    New Parliament House

There is a free guide service which assists visitors. Visitors may participate in guided tours of Parliament House. These free tours are conducted regularly.

  5. I've lived in nearly all of those places.

Seriously the Airports and chockas full of brochures that will spin your head!

Sydney go to "the Rocks" and hang out - walk the harbour bridge - more locals should too. Go sit on one of the beaches - swim if it's warm enough for you. Go to Botany bay and see where Captain Cook first landed - see if you can see what he saw in Australia that was so good....Our 2000 olympic site is in Homebush Sydney and it is a very active area - go check it out - there is often something on there - if only a swim and park picnic.

Take a trip up to Katoomba and see the 3 sisters.

Canberra - go to the high court and learn about our legal system - it was absolutley fascinating!! The mint. Canberra is one of the few cities in the world that was seriously planned as a capital city. There are walk ways /cycle ways and horse riding paths as well some overlap but others are completely separate and you will see different parts of the city. Check our parliament house - it cost us enough.

Cairns - my hearts home... it has changed so much and the city is a bit too much city for me now.. go to the beaches (but DO NOT swim) the jellies are fierce (seriously) snorkel on the reef - that's pretty safe-ish - but go with a cruise for that...

Get a car and head up to the Atherton tablelands there's a giant curtain fig that is a site to see, The twin lakes - Lake Eacham and Lake Barine - go see the Crater (old volcano) all 3 are linked underground. Check out the Twin Giant trees - ask locals they will help you. Go to the Karanda Markets.

Catch the train up the hill to Baron River Falls. take a trip to Mossman gorge - you can swim but be careful of the rapids, the current is sneaky and deep.

Best of luck - 1 day is just not enough for any of them....

  6. If you only have one day free in Sydney take the 'red bus'.  They run every 20 minutes and stop at around 30 stops around Sydney.  You can get on/get off all day.  As well as giving you an overall impression of Sydney you will have time to get off for either 20/40/60 minutes at a few of there famous landmarks and have a look around and take photos.

Canberra is a very interesting place.  Take a day tour  that visits some of their famous sights like our parliament house (a very interesting building architecturally - it is built into a hill with grass and gardens over the top) and the war museum.

With one day in Melbourne you could just walk of catch the trams around the city.  Check out southgate, the botanical gardens, the Victoria market and lots of little alleyways that make our city interesting.  There is a free city circle tram and a free tourist bus that circles around some landmarks close to the city.

  7. Canberra - Parliament House, War Memorial & Museum, National Galley of Australia, National Museum.  National Gallery has a Turner to Matisse landscape exhibition at the moment. You need the best part of a day to get a half decent look at the War Memorial Museum.  It's one of the largest and best in the world.

Sydney.  Of course the Opera House, you can see the bridge from there.

Melbourne.  Prince's Bridge is nice, the old Exihibition building, you might like the shopping in Chapel Street

If you visit any two of these places you are not going to make it to Cairns unless you get just the right flight.

  8. Heaps - but 1st stop - the major theme parks on the Gold Coast. Dreamworld, Movieworld, Seaworld, and Wet and Wild.

  9. Get a naked sun tan !

  10. To try and visit all these places for a day each would be nearly impossible, especially as this is a fairly large country. From Cairns to Melbourne is at least a 4 day drive. You would have to fly and 1 day in each place would not do any of them justice. You should try and pick one area and visit as many of the places the other people have recommended. Cairns in June should still be warm enough to visit most places of interest, the other 3 places will be starting to get quite cool, especially Canberra. From Canberra it is a short drive to the NSW snowfields as well, it may be worth it if you are interested.
