What is there to do in Bordeaux, France? How is the night life?

I'll be studying abroad in Bordeaux, and would like to have a "sneak peak" at what I can expect. How is the night life? What interesting activities are popular in that area? How are the people?

Bordeaux is a great place - lots of bars, restaurants etc in the main town. Lots of good shopping, theatres and cinemas and good transport with a (fairly) new tram system. It has an interesting history.

As well as the city I would recommend also travelling outside the city to see the vineyards in the surrounding area - you can generally go for a tour of the premises and do some wine tasting. I would also recommend going to the coast around Bordeaux - lovely sandy beaches and good for surfing too (if you want that kind of thing). Of course go and see the rugby and visit the surrounding twons, villages and cities.
