I want to study abroad there at University of Queensland. Will I be bored for a few months? Or are there fun things to do there? I hear the people are so friendly in Australia. Is this true? I'm from America and everyone hates Americans :[.

  1. We don't hate Americans. We're generally just not too keen on your President. Anyone who blathers on about Americans here is usually doing it eating McDonalds, wearing Nikes, listening to Beyonce and watching Desperate Housewives...so you don't need to worry about them.

You'll be homesick for a bit, but if you're stufying there's always going to be stuff to do. There's a good nightlife on weekends, the Uni is located in one of the prettiest spots in the city, it's easy to get around from St Lucia on public transport and yes, for the most part the people are really lovely.

Come on over. You'll enjoy it.

  2. I have to agree with all the above ... you'll probably want to stay longer than a few months.  We don't hate american's, we just hate the smart-***, think their sh*t don't stink type.

  3. You will find heaps to do if you're here for a few months. Especially if you have the budget to travel around a little. I wouldn't worry much about people, as long as you're friendly they will be friendly back.

  4. Brisbane is awesome - there is plenty to see.

You should also look up the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast (they are both only an hour or so away and have so many attractions)

Yep, there are plenty of friendly people in Australia (especially Brisbane) but don't assume that every one you meet will be friendly. and I wouldn't say that everyone hates americans. Just be friendly and you'll do fine.

    All the best

  5. There are plenty of things to do, but I can't help with specifics for your age group.

However, I am sure that you will make loads of local friends at Uni, and they will help you to find the age appropriate things to do.

Australians are very friendly with friendly people, but dislike the arrogant type, whether from USA, Britain or anywhere else.

Depending on how you come across, will depend on how you are received.

    Good luck and enjoy :)

  6. If you're studying at UQ, you won't be in the least bit bored. There's plenty to do in Brisbane (good nightlife and pubs) and on campus and you have the Gold and Sunshine Coasts only an hour away to the north and south if you feel like a change.

If you play sport, UQ has excellent facilities and teams in every conceivable sport and they're very accustomed to overseas students playing for a few months and then leaving to go back home. There are a lot of less strenuous activities available as well.

You'll find your fellow students to be very friendly and laid back and Australians really know how to have a good time. Your being American is far more likely to interest rather than repel them - it's simply not true to say that Australians hate Americans. Some will dislike some of the things your government does, but they won't hold that against you personally. Just be friendly and take it with a grain of salt if they give you a hard time. The Australian sense of humour can be a bit difficult for Americans to understand at first - we 'take the mickey' out of everyone, including ourselves, but it's all in genuine fun and shouldn't ever be taken seriously. Just give as good as you get and you'll be fine.
