  1. There's an amazing rock at Stavanger - Pulpit rock

I've been looking at videos of it on YouTube

If I was going there with an 8 year old I would definitely visit it - but maybe it's not the thing to do with a two year old.

  2. As it is several hours flying to Stavanger from the Netherlands, I do not think you will get many detailed answers in this section.

    Try general Europe next time.

But Stavanger has at least one museum, a bit of beach (if I remember right) and a fjord.

I think your children will be happy just wandering around, maybe playing on the waterside, or if they have a lot of energy, doing a moderate mountain walk.

And your cruise ship will have info on the tours that will be offered. Even when you do not join the tour, you might be able to visit the same things, if less of them.

  3. there is plenty of things to do in Stavanger, but they require more initiative than other destinations.

Stavanger is located int he county of Rogaland on the West Coast of Norway, and has amazing natural surroundings. An absolute must-see is 'Prekestolen', or The Pulpit Rock as it is called in english. This is an extraordinary thing to have experienced. It requires hiking, but it is well worth the walk, even for an 8 year old.

there are plenty more outdoor opportunitites, check out "Lysefjorden, one of Norway's most beautiful fjords.

Go fishing, go on whale safari, walk around the Old town, go to the fish marked, go to the beach. The Stavanger Museum is not that interesting, althoughit does have an intersting Viking section. I would recommend just spending as much time outdoors as possible. Perhaps rent a car for a day or two and drive around the area. It really has lovely surroundings.

In the winter season there are also plenty of ourdoor activities, skiing, snowboarding etc.

    Good luck!!!! :)

  4. You'll have a very difficult time climbing Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) if you're visiting Stavanger by cruise ship.  Especially with the two kids!  You'd need to take a ferry across the harbor, a bus to the start of the hiking trail, and then it's a 2-hour uphill hike to the top.  We just got back from a cruise to Stavanger, and we really wanted to do this.  However, even being a generally fit and active couple, we thought it would be too big a risk of missing the ship.

You can see the rock from the base if you do a sightseeing cruise on Lysefjord.  Your ship probably offers this as an excursion, but you can also do it on your own, and there are a number of companies offering fjord cruises:

The petroleum museum in Stavanger is surprisingly interesting and has some great exhibits of offshore drilling operations.  There are a lot of hands-on exhibits that would appeal to the kids from basic geology demonstrations to a sample escape net that they can slide down.  There's also a 3D movie and a playground outside designed from reused equipment.

Additionally, you can stroll around the old neighborhood with its narrow streets and white wooden houses, visit the Stavanger cathedral, and see the historic waterfront and watchtower.

Check out the Stavanger tourism site for more ideas and information:
