The East has everything that makes it like any other place. Everything that's left of real Ireland is in the West and the South.

Rent a car, but be careful, the roads are narrow, but are often very busy.

Favorite restaurant (I'm a seafood lover): Moran's Oyster cottage, south of Galway

Hikers:  Stay in Westport (cute town on the N5) and then hike to Croagh Patrick.  Read about the History of Croagh Patrick to make it more meaningful.  Bundle up though, and have set of warm, dry clothing waiting for you at the bottom!  

Geological Wonder:  The Connemara National Park- The Landscape is unlike anything I've seen.

Most Pleasant Surprise:  Northern Ireland.  It turned out to be my favorite part of my trip.  Not to be missed-Giant's Causway.  Stay in Portrush or Port Stewart, but eat in Portrush at Ramore:

It's a nice break from the blandness of the food.  Not expensive, but delicious.

Bushmills Irish Whiskey Tour

Real Surprise Enjoyment:  The Ulster-American Folk Park.  It gave a great history on the migration of Irish people to America.  The park includes historic buildings and people in period garb explaining life in the 1800's.  Sounds boring the way I write it, but it was amazing.

The east of Ireland is just like any other country in the world right now. it defeats the whole purpose of coming to Ireland if you just visit the east.  Dublin could be any city in Europe. If you wanna see real Ireland go west . Just like the pet shop boys said!!

Giants Causeway, Conamarra marble, Galway Bay(Mcdonagh's for fresh fish), Downton Galway Bay is fun at night, Then on to the Ring of Kerry and Waterford(Waterford Crystal) All great places to stop over or stay for a couple of days.

The Cliffs of Moher are spectacular:  700 feet straight down to the Atlantic Ocean.  We also liked the Aillwee Caves and the Burren in County Clare.  The Dingle Peninsula is about as scenic as it gets.

The people that wrote about Northern Ireland are right, it's great too but it has nothing to do with this question.
