I would say rent a car so that you wont be stuck on in the tourist traps. You could visit the beautiful village of Nerja, they have amazing caves there too.  Its just east of Malaga. You could take a tour of Malaga, it has some interesting sites.  Then head west to Mijas, its a beautiful whitewashed village in the mountains overlooking Fuengirola and Mijas del sol.  It is amazing to be there when the sun is setting.  Marbella has a nightlife, is that is what you are into, you find all the rich there.  You want to get away from the coast abit and explore further I strongly recommend a trip to Seville and Cordoba to see the Mezquite. Also, take a trip down to the Rock of Gibraltar.  Have fun : ))
