What is there to see in Salzburg if I only had a day or two to travel here?

Staying in the bavarian Alps this September and doing soem of Germany and Austria..What is nice and do able with young children.

the castle at Salzburg is really beautiful and worth seeing.  Salzburb is also where a lot of the Sound of Music was filmed, so if your kids like the film, you can take them on one of the Sound of Music tours of the City.

For some extra fun, there is a medieval village carved into the side of a mountain about an hour and a half train ride from the city called Halstadt.  you have to take a fairy accross the lake to this enchanting old mining town where there are no streets, but stairs.  what is fun for the kids are the salt mines.  They can learn a little geology and history before going sliding down parts of the mine (this is totally safe)

I was there in December with a large group who was very into the Christmas market scene. I'm pretty broke, so I broke off from the group and got lost walking through the city and it was the BEST part of my trip.  

Definitely take a long walk by the river. Just enjoy the quaint little houses and bridges and look for the row of homes carved right into the side of the cliff!

I started north by the train station and walked on the river path south toward the plaza and then had a croissant and glutwein at a little cafe to warm up. The plaza is achetectually (sp?) gorgeous and very detailed and (if I remember right...) there's a castle or fortress on top of the hill overlooking the town square area.

When going there with children you must not miss the Toy Museum. Much more interesting than  Mozart's birth place for them:

In the south of Salzburg there is the zoo

nearby the Zoo is Schloss Hellbrunn (Hellbrunn Palace) with the famous trick fountains and the dwarf sculptures in the park

There are combined tickets valid for both - the zoo and the palace incl. trick fountains. (reduced entrance fees for families). Should be fun for the children as well.

Also close to Salzburg in the town of Hallein (south of Salzburg but very close) is another Salt mine open to the public very similar to the one in Hallstadt (same owner)

So if you do not want to go to Hallstadt because of the distance that would be an alternative.

Also in Hallein there is the Celts museum and the "Stille Nacht Museum Hallein" (Silent Night museum - the composer of Silent Night, Holy Night lived in Hallein for 28 years and is buried there)  the ticket for the salt mine is also valid for those.  Not sure if those museums are not too boring for children?

When doing Bavaria/Austria in September bring a jacket and an umbrella ;-) it can be 30 degrees Celsius and sunny or 15 degrees and raining. Enjoy your visit!!

Maybe start at the well with the legendary seahorses and walk to the lapping mill wheel of the Almkanal followed by refreshments at the ancient monastery bakery or look for the knight's grave at St. Peter's Church and see what St. Florian is holding in his hand at the Florian Fountain?And of Course Mozart stuff like visit his house or museums that have his music history
