What is this Georgia/Russia thing going on?!?

Please explain...I dont understand what is going on, but im seeing it on the news and TV. I also have a brother in the army, does this mean trouble for him?

Well our brothers in arms Russia attacked them because the attacked a part of southern Russia,where live many people from Russia,thats why they attacked them.And that wouldnt be trouble to your brother coz theyll probably end it soon.Hope that helps ;]

Depends on which TV channel you watch.

Russia Today TV says that Russia sending in a peacekeeping force as Georgia is committing genocide on the people of South Ossetia.

The western media is simply talking about Russia invading Georgia.

As far as I know there are only Russian journalists in South Ossetia.  

All we can do is wait for the western media to move in and by then we should know the full facts.

Or will we?

It appears that Georgia started the conflict and attacked South Ossetia first, a region of Georgia that wants to break free of Georgia.  Russia responded by counterattacking Georgia.  I'm assuming that you mean your brother is in the US army.  I don't think you have to worry about it too much - South Ossetia will probably be incorporated into Russia (where they mostly want to be) unless Russia expands the aggression farther south into Georgia.  The US has too many other military considerations and limits at this point in time.

there is a province in georgia, its called south ossetia,  who boke away from georgia in 1991 they wanted to be independent, nobody recognizes it yet except russia. they about 90 percent russian. geogia in the last couple last days attacked that province to keep them in check. so russia came in and attacked them because they said we have to protect the russian citizens. =P

ok, here is the low down.

South Ossetia is a region that Georgia considers is theirs. But the people of South Ossetia want to be part of Russia. Georgia Attacked south Ossetia hoping to take ethe region by force. But since south ossetians have russian citizenship it is considered as an attack on Russia. So russia steps in and defends the people of S.O.

When Russia was Communist, they took control of a country to the south known as Georgia. When Communist Russia broke apart ('89-91) Georgia unofficially declared its independence. However, a section of Georgia, known as Southern Ossetia, prefered to be a part of Russia instead of Georgia.

Conflict broke out until a peace treaty was signed in the early 90's.

In 2004, tensions started again. Georgia and Southern Ossetia started fighting and, in Aug of 2008, several Russian peacekeepers were killed by a Georgian attack. In response, Russia sent in its army and air force to remove Georgia from Ossetia.

There are reports that Russia is attacking civilian targets, which have been denied repeatedly by Russian officials. Georgia has tried to create a cease-fire, but Russia has failed to acknowledge it. Since this, Georgia has declared a state of war with Russia.

Ukraine has vowed support for Georgia.

U.S. interests in Georgia rest with an oil pipeline that runs through the country and supplies locations in Europe. The U.S. has also supported Georgia with military supplies, as has Israel.

If the conflict escalates (ex: Israel attacks Iran), then your brother is more than likely going to see combat. Unfortunately, so is the rest of America's youth as a draft will probably be established.
