  1. You don't say how big it was. It could have been a shield beetle

  2. I can't think of any green insects that size in the U.K.

Tiger beetlle grow to about 1.5 cm

Beetles are highly unlikely to bite you.  It is far more likely to be a spider, tick, mosquito or gnat.  When you are biten by a mosquito or gnat it is bacteria carried by the insect which causes itchiness. Therefore two gnat bites can cause quite different reactions depending on what microbes each gnat is carrying.

Sheildbugs a.k.a. Stinkbugs are native to the U.K. and the U.S. In the U.K. they grow to about 1.5 c.m.   The live by sucking sap from plants and would stay away from animals not bite them.

These are two of the largest.

Dagonflies and damselflies come in all colours and may bite if caught, but they are not active at night.   They feed on mosquitoes, flies and other small insects.

    Here's an olive looking one.

  3. Sounds like a June or May bug. Check out the pics on the link below. They are harmless and tend not to bite. I expect you may have been nibbled by a mozzie. Just rub a little antihistamine cream on or antiseptic. Oh yes, and don't scratch it. lol.
