What is this bug/beetle???

There are these wierd looking beetle like things in my yard, there like 3-4 inchs. long and about an inch in width and it has a long needle coming out of it's reer, the needle looks like a porky pine quil does anyone know what it is???? and if they are harmful????

A picture would be helpful, considering there are a handful of beetles, wasps and larvae that fit that general description.
