The country in question is made up of England, Wales, Northern Ireland e.tc.(I guess). It at times calls itself Britain, Great Britain, United Kingdom blah bla blah. So what exactly is this country's real name. Currently in the Olympics they are going by the name of Great Britain.

  1. Great Britain is not a country, it is made up of the countries of Scotland, England and Wales (The island is called great Britain)

The UK (United Kingdom) is Great Britain + Northern Ireland but for some reason in international competition they compete as Great Britain but do include Northern Ireland.

Some sports such as football (soccer) the individual countries of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland are allowed to compete separately but mostly it is as GBR (Great Britain but including Northern Ireland too!)

Just to confuse it further, "Great Britain" is actually the name of the main island and does not include the islands around such as SKye, Orkney, Shetland Outer Hebrides etc but generally it is accepted that these are also part of 'Britain' (Through commonusage I guess)

Scotland and Northern Ireland have abit more autonomy when it comes to government too with Scotland having separate laws "Scots Law' so yes it is confusing!

  2. It's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland but is generally shortened to the United Kingdom. Great Britain refers only to England, Wales and Scotland.

I think, although I'm not 100% certain, that athletes from Northern Ireland can choose the team they wish to compete for (either GBR or Ireland)

    Hope this helped!

  3. da place where da british people be man

  4. Technically it is the United Kingdom, as Northern Ireland is included in the UK, but not in Great Britain. Odd, I know.
