What is this dessert food called?

Its a fried ball of dough, I believe its French. Its name starts with a V. Any guesses would be appreciated :)

  1. Could be a "Beignet", which is fried dough topped with powdered sugar. Very popular in New Orleans.

  3. Beignet..  it is a French style of doughnut that is served regularly in New Orleans at the Cafe Du Monde. Hopefully this is what  you are looking for.

  4. Vetkoek (literally, Fat Cake) a deep fried ball of dough, served either with a sweet or savoury filling. Fillings include, jam (Jelly), fruit preserves, cheese, minced meat, savoury or curried, or just some butter or margarine. A popular dish in the Afrikaner community and a staple food at fetes (flea market / community market). They are varied in size, from as small as a golf ball up to a large fist size. South Africans love them so much even a comedy series was created about a shop dedicated to selling Vetkoek, called "Vetkoek paleis" (Fat Cake Palace).

  7. The French fried dough would be Beignet (which can also be found in Louisiana), but there is a South African fried dough called Vetkoek.
