well, i heard that in Sweden, they are making a divice ment to make black holes. but, it could end the earth!? i heard that i awill eat the earth's core. and will cause earthquakes and stuff. and in 2009 or 2010, it could kill us!? i am only a 12 year old girl, so please dont scare me. i just want to know what it is. i am religious, and i heard someplace that god once said that the earth will end when every body thinks they are god. well, that has not happened yet. HELP I AM SO SUPER SCARED!

  1. The device is called the Large Hadron Collider.  It slams proton together at a high speed and records the results.

In theory, it could form microscopic black holes.  These black holes are so small, that they will evaporate long before they can absorb any energy/matter.  In fact, the black holes won't even survive long enough to get out of the collider.

If you are still concerned, consider that the Earth is constantly being bombarded by space-born high-energy particles and that these are very likely producing microscopic black holes.  We're still here

  2. it will be fine... cheer up!!

  3. Your thinking of the C.E.R.N. super conductor and it won't be ready until 2012 or so i hear, also micro-black holes will be created but at there same time they will collapse in on themselves ceasing to exist and won't destroy the world.

  4. Hello I am a 13 year old boy, and I am here to tell you that everything will be fine. First of all, the machine you are thinking of is the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). It will be the most powerful particle accelorator built, and could potentially create microscopic rips in space-time, which are considered black holes.

But these black holes will have the mass of maybe an atom. That is no where near enough to suck the Earth into it. Only supermassive black holes have enough gravitational force to potentially swallow a star or a planet. If a black hole were to replace out sun, but had the same mass of the sun, we would continue our normal orbit. We wouldn't get sucked in. Of course, we would not live because it would be extreamily cold, but the point is we wouldn't get sucked in.

A lot of people say that it could end earth just to scare people. Its like that 2012 theory going around. It has no scientific evidence, much less any scientific proof. In fact, there was a test on this machine a few years back that performed the same experiments it is going to be performing when it is switched on. So the experiments have already been conducted, and we are still here today!

You see, a black hole doesn't necissarily suck things in. Some black holes can be the size of a tenis ball, and they are simply there. They are not going to be sucking in a star or a planet.

Now, supermassive black holes or another story. As far as we know, they are created when a neutron star collapses under its own gravity, and forms a rip in space time. There is a supermassive black hole in the center of our galaxy, and pretty much every observed spiral galaxy. But this black hole isn't going to suck us in for a couple of reasons. First of all, we are way too far away from the galactic center, second, we have been orbiting this black hole ever sense our galaxy was made.

Any of these "black holes" that are formed, if they are formed, will be so small that they can only be seen through an electron microscope. And we wouldn't have a chance to see them because first of all they are dark matter, meaning they are invisible, and second they are so small that the rip will be mended almost instantly.

I am not very religious, in fact I am an athiest, but I can ensure you that if God was real, he would not disobey the laws of physics seeing as if he was real, he probably created them. Like I said, I am an athiest so I really can't help you out there.

So don't be scared. Don't pay attention to anyone that says the world is going to end anytime soon, because it isn't. If you have any more questions, just shoot me an email and I would be glad to answer them for you. :)
