What is this guinea pig's problem?

I'm pet-sitting a guinea pig for my friend, and it won't let me touch it or hold it or anything. It squeals and tries to bite me every time I put my hand in it's cage. It's owners have 3 little boys, so I know it's used to being handled. I have had rabbits and hamsters in the past, but this is my first time taking care of a guinea pig. The family is gone for 2 more weeks and I don't know what to do with it!

  1. First try feeding him. Then, he may get a bit used to you and your smell. Then maybe try storking him or holding him. It is probably the guinea pig. Not you. good luck!

  2. Your friends piggie is just mad because it thinks you're it's new owner and it misses your friend. Once I went to Atlantic City, NJ and I left my piggie with a friend. She reported that when she said something he's used to hearing and I said around him, he was very happy :) Why?.....I really don't know. I hope the same thing works with you. I'm surprised though because guinea pigs are playful animals.

  3. Try stroking his nose between his eyes, that will relax him. Talk to him in a soft voice. He just isn't used to you yet and is weary of his new surroundings. Let him smell your fingers, and spoil him with his favorite treats (not to many tho) you don't want him to get sick.Try picking him up in a couple days, he should be o.k. by then. Good luck.

  4. Give it some lettuce with your scent on it. Guinea pigs love food, so if it connects you with getting a good treat, it will start to behave for you. It may scratch you once you try to pick it up, and run away, but that is just a Guinea pigs nature. Give it a few days to get used to you petting it and giving it treats. Good luck!

  5. Hmmmmmm, How long have you had it for? Cause if its been more than a couple days it may be pregnant, and trying to protect its young.

  6. it probably isn't used to you yet. Just talk to it,and let him get familiar with you. He'll warm up yo you soon enough! Good luck, don't give up!
