What is this helicopter doing?

Question

a helicopter with a blue light has been circling my house for hours and its 2 in the morning!

just gong in one small circle over and over and over ..

I can't sleep.

WTF is it doing?

Looking for the next police chase as soon as they get you out of the house.

I think it's a Police 'copter searching for the 'bad guys' or just on patrol.

And I'd love to have one of those lights mounted on my car for people who don't dip their lights to oncoming traffic and for left lane bandits. I would bet that I could burn the paint off their trunks with one of these.

It's almost certainly looking for a fugitive or overseeing some other police operation. The only other helis you'll see very commonly in a city are news and medical flights but it's very unlikely that it would be a news helicopter, as they can't really cover anything at night and medical helicopter wouldn't be hanging around so long with such a time critical job. Police helicopters are used very commonly at night to track fugitives or monitor critical situations both for their mobility and for the infra-red cameras they carry, which allow them to track people and vehicles with very little light. So they're probably just out keeping an eye on some trouble.
