What is this ? i want to know what is off side in football explain

in football? it's when a defensive player crosses the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped. in soccer? it's what the first 2 people said, kinda like the same rule in hockey

You can only be off-sides when  you are on the other teams side of the field. In order  to be off-sides all the defenders on the other team must be in front of you (closer to your half of the field). The only time off-sides would be a penalty would be if you are behind the last defender when the ball is kicked. If you are in front of the last defender and after the ball is kicked run in front, you are not considered off-side. If someone on your team is off-sides when the ball is kicked, then the other team gets a free kick.

A player is in an offside position if he is in his opponents' half of the field and is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and fewer than two opponents. A player level with the second to last opponent is not in an offside position.
