It is a large window that fits inside of a front or back door to a house. It's not just glass though, can't remember if has wood or plastic around the glass, but it has littlefittings so it will stay in place when put in a door. Total size is about for 4t long and about 3 feet wide. What is this thing called? Thanks for the help.

  1. I believe you are talking about a door 'insert' (sometimes called a 'glass panel').  Our local hardware store sells doors and they carry a small stock of standard size inserts (square and oval) which you can put into the door... gives the option to 'customize' the door just a little bit, hehe.

There are several suppliers that provide custom door inserts, even to full length views.

The insert comes with a lip/frame, and retainer.  The insert is placed in the door (caulked in place), and then the retainer is attached from the opposite side with screws.  Moulded plastic is a common choice for the frame, more expensive models may have wood.

If youve got one at 4ft long, that's longer than standard... so if you are looking to replace it for some reason, you'll be looking for a custom insert provider, most likely.

    Good Luck

  2. I can't tell from your description what it is but I can tell you that the average door is 30" wide (2.5 feet) which means that your glass insert is probably not 36" (3 feet) wide.

  3. Are you talking about a storm door?
