I really want to be some sort of eye doctor, and recently I have heard of a vision therapist, or a behavioural optometrist. Does anyone know stuff that they do? I know that they generally work with children, but I'm having trouble finding other aspects of the job.

Also, what training would they need?

Thanks!

  1. A behavioral optometrist is an optometrist who has completed doctoral training to receive their doctor of optometry and has gone on to specialize in this area.  Basically, behavioral optometrists tend to work mostly with school age children who are struggling in school and learning due to problems with their vision such as poor visual perception, poor focusing ability, poor eye tracking or saccadic abilities, etc. etc.  Behavioral optometrists attempt to help children perform better educationally by helping the child develop better vision capabilities.  I would recommend you google "College of Optometrists in Vision Development" for a better insight into behavioral optometry.

  3. Depending on the area that you live in there are schools that offer training to become an Ophthalmic technician, I am currently in a 20 month program, I will be able to assist in Lasik, pediatrics, glaucoma, retinal specialists, surgeries etc.

I can also do all the basic eye exams in an office, and contacts etc.
