My girlfriend found this thing growing on a stick in a lake in southeast Ohio. Anyone have any clue what it could be?

  1. What size is it?

  2. Sure it isnt a fake? Then maybe its a frog's nest.

  3. They are the eggs of a Northwestern Salamander.  Check out the link below.

The reason why they have that crazy design on them is probably because the water level of lake has fallen, which has exposed the eggs to the open air.  The slimy egg sack has begun to dry in order to hold in the moister to protect the eggs inside.  When the egg sack dries it gets that weird star burst shaped design on it.  I hope that helps.

  4. amphibian eggs - maybe salamanders or frogs

  5. I agree with Don't Ask. They're definitely amphibian eggs; be it toad, frog or salamander. Since they were on a stick in a lake, I would go with some species of frog. (Bullfrog perhaps?)  Toad and salamander clutches would not likely be in that setting.
