Question:

What is this pattern?

I just started advanced geometry and I am having a little bit of trouble finding the pattern in this.

7, 2, 5, -3, 8, -11

I need to find the next two terms in the pattern.

I would appreciate it as well if there was a little bit of explanation as well.

Thank you!

  1. Take the first number and subtract the second number...

    7 - 2 = 5

    2 - 5 = -3

    5 - (-3) = 8

    and so on...

    so if you take

    8 - (-11) = 19 which is the next number

    -11 - 19 = -30

  2. 7, 2, 5, -3, 8, -11

    Let's look at the first 3 numbers first:

    7, -2, 5

    7-2 = 5

    Now, let's look at the next set of 3 numbers:

    2, 5, -3

    2-5 = -3

    Let's look at one more set:

    5, -3, 8

    5-(-3) = 5+3 = 8

    So, your next two terms should be:

    Next term = 8-(-11) = 8+ 11 = 19

    2nd next term = -11 - 19 = -30

  3. The difference between two terms are

    -5, + 3, - 8, 11, -19

    Look at the -5 and + 3, how do we make - 8 ? - 5 subtract 3

    Use the same pattern.  3 subtract - 8 = 11

    -8 subtract 11 = - 19

    Next difference 11 subtract - 19 = 30 --> the number is 19

    Next difference -19 subtract 30 = -49 --> the number is -30

    So  7, 2, 5, -3, 8, -11, 19, -30

    The difference are

    -5, + 3, - 8, 11, -19, 30, -49
