What is this plant, and how do I rejuvenate it?

There is a pretty sad looking plant in the lobby of my condo building. It looks like the cleaning crew has abandoned it. What is it -- maybe a banana plant of some type? Can I cut it back at all without killing it? Are the leaves supposed to split?

Jupiter is right, but it might also need some more sun because it is leaning at the window and it may have some root rot. It may not be root bound, but you should probally repot it so it gets fresher soil.

looks like a very large peace lily. it needs to be repotted and watered and given plant food

It needs re-potting. My goodness it has completely outgrown its' home.   That might be a banana plant.  Hard to tell from the photo.  I would ask someone before you take on the task of re-potting it.  I think a larger pot and some fresh soil will give it the help it needs.
