  1. That ball on the plant is not a bud it's a gall infection.

    A gall is caused by insect larvae or fungi infection in the stem region of the plant.

    To get the indentification you must cut it open. YUCK!

    The plant is a goldenrod Solidago which is very prone to this disease.
