What is this "trick of the mind" called?

(I don't know where else to put this question..I'm used to going to ya'll for answers. You're my "people" lol)

Question:If you're used to seeing the same thing/person every day and then it changes...but you don't notice the changes because you EXPECT to see the same thing. What causes that and what do you call it?

It's called not paying attention.It's an example of why you can't always trust your memories and perceptions.

Ooh, good question, I've been wanting to know this one.  There is a scientific name for it but I can't remember it.  I know scientists think the native Americans had this when they first "saw" the European ship sells.

I do know that it's not a simple delusion.

optical  illusions, or ur mind being adjusted to it so its a pattern so when it does change u dont notice, yeah it happens to everyone

for the wholeJesus things, no one knows how he looks, so all those painting r ppl's guesses of how he does so someone seeing a photo with a guy in a robe with a beard and thinking its Jesus is just because they're i dont wanna say stupid but i cant think of a better word

At first I wanted to say it is something like conditioning, but that normally refers to learning and behavior.  The other thing that came to mind was sensory adaptation where you sense something, but after awhile, your brain ignores it so that it can process other information so that you dont get overloaded.  Seems to me kind of like a combination of the two.

Wushuboy, once again you are contradicting your self...you say there are no such things as spirits, paranormal, after life, you say when someone dies, thats it, no more, no going to the after life, you cannt become a spirit.....but here you say that jesus is supposed to be alive, but he isnt on earth, according to the bible, he is at the right hand of God in heaven waiting to return.....Now im confused, cause he died 2000 years ago, and there are no spirits, nor heaven nor anything paranormal...isnt this what you say....so how can there be one and not the other....doesnt make sense does it.?????

I thought I understood what you were asking until you started giving examples. A lot of people on here have the same avatar, or avatars that looks so close that you might get confused if you dont read the name.

Jesus lived long before photos, and even though he is supposed to still be alive, he isnt on earth. According to the bible he is at the right hand of God in heaven waiting to return.

So you see, old pictures of men with beards and robes are not Jesus, because Jesus was crucified long before the invention of cameras and he hasn't been seen on earth since he ascended into heaven months later.
