What is this sewing machine accessory?

I recieved a sewing machine from a realative and this came with it... I have no idea what it is. Can anyone tell me what it's for and how it works? Thanks!

  1. its for making button holes. you set the machine to the button hole setting if it haas one & the machine does the work.

    if it doesn't have a setting--set it to a wide zigzag then stitch in the same spot 3 or 4 times. set it to a fine zigzag with stitches as close together as you can. put machine in reverse & sew the required length. put machine in wide zigzag & stitch in same spot 3 or 4 times, put back to fine zigzag & sew forward to wear you started. put back to wide zig zag & stitch in same spot 3 or 4 times


  2. Looks like a button hole foot.  you use the opening that is adjustable to help you keep your button holes the same size.  

    You don't have to use this to make button holes - it's just a guide to help make them all the same size without measuring each time.  If you have a machine that is newer (and probably digital) and does button holes automatically this foot is less neccessary.

    If you have an older model, or a basic model, then this foot helps out.

    The red marks are to help you measure.
