  1. Stag beetle, totally harmless, though ugly.

Only the male has the large pincers, but they cannot hurt you with them, they are used for mating

  2. It is one of the stag beetles.  There are 30 known species of North America.

They are not nasty, neither are they ugly.  They truth is only humans are ugly.

Edit:  Paul is wrong.  Any decent biologist knows it is nearly impossible to make a positive id based on a photograph.

  3. looks like a stag beetle.. ewwwww

  4. That's a small species of Stag Beetle.  They are completely harmless.  They eat vegetation.  Their eggs are usually laid within old trees or rotting logs.  The larvae (grub) feeds on the wood, pupates, and changes into an adult beetle.  Woodpeckers love the grubs.  The large horn-like protrusions on the front of the males are used for battling it out for the female, and are harmless to humans.

Insects get into homes because there are small, undetected places where they can enter.  They enter solely by mistake, looking for a place to hide or whatever.  The best thing to do the next time you see one, is to just grab him and turn him loose outside.  He will not hurt you.

  5. Male stag beetle Pseudolucanus capreolus.

They are often attracted to lights at night.  They feed on decaying wood.
