Question:

What is this spot above my tooth?

I had this white spot above my tooth and a dentist told me i had a small abscess so put me on antibiotics for a week.

I finished them but the spot is still there.. not all the time but its more like a tiny hole and sometimes has a bit of white stuff come out when i press the gum round it.

Could it just be the fact that the tooth is still infected? because i am supposed to have root canal on it but ive been putting it off.

also, could the infected tooth be giving me strange headaches?

  1. Its an abscess :)

Try swirling salty water round your mouth, and popping it with with a pin. If its still bothering you, just go back to your dentist!!

  2. dentist is right and no it hasn't gone away.probably explains the headache too

  3. root canal put off = tooth needs to come out.

you must do the root canal asap or else it will not get better.

  4. The white stuff is probably puss, in which case you'll need root-canal work done. I can't guarantee that you won't lose the tooth (hopefully only one root is infected) but these days you can buy an implant (it's just like being able to buy a new tooth) for £2000-£2500, which is extremely cheap and worth every penny if you are worried about your appearance.

The infected tooth can definitely give you a headache because your sinuses are all interconnected, I'm surprised you haven't had toothache though.

  5. its a sinus tract made by your abscess, it is a little channel that the abscess makes to the outside so the abscess drains by itself, you still need the tooth sorting out. I dont know about the headaches and dont want to worry you but abscesses can be dangerous and can spread to the brain, I advise you to see someone very soon.

  6. get your root canal done soon!!!! It probably is only going to get worse with time, you need to get in and get that done before you lose your tooth completely (lovely huh)

    GOOD LUCK

  7. I'm a dental assistant of 2yrs.  I deal with lots of teeth everyday!

Some people need more than one round of meds to clear up an infection.  The infection needs to be as cleared up as much as possible before the root canal to prevent any futher problems.  I would call your dentist and tell them it's not gone and they will either give you some more meds, or have you come in and they can drain some of the infection out.

Please don't put off the root canal!  That's why you have the headache.  And if you push it off, you can either lose the tooth, or you'll wake up one night in so so much pain you'll want to pass out.

Don't worry about the root canal.  People freak out so easily over it, but they aren't that bad!
