What is this stinging insect?

I already asked this, but I asked in the wrong section. My friend was stung by one of these nasty things and had his knee swollen for nearly a month. It lives primarily in the woods. It has a dart or arrow-shaped stinger on it. It is often seen with it's stinger buried into the barks of trees. We call them timberflies around here, but I know it's not the proper name. Is it a type of wasp?

  1. I think that it is a Ichneumon wasp and that thing in the bark is it's ovipositor, what it lays it's eggs with.

  2. Learn to ID them, here -
