What is this tree... Picture included!!?

Hi everyone... Not that this is so important... more or less I'm just curious as to what this tree with these lime looking things on them are.... We live in upstate NY and no its not a lime tree... The tree is huge... the green things smell a little funny and are pretty hard... I included a picture of a branch i also sliced on in half... HI!

The tree is a chestnut tree....the big clue is you said the pod had an unpleasant smell and the leaf is too pointy for walnut.  The nut inside the pod  has not matured yet.

  A chestnut shell has spikes on it (kinda like a blowfish).

This is a walnut tree.
