It is called Bitter Gourd--Karela in Hindi ,Paagar Kai in Tamil,Kaakarakaaya in Telugu.It is very,very,very bitter in taste.All over India, Pakistan, Bangaladesh, Nepal, Srilanka it is used.Available in New York (Jakson Heights) also.--It was sold for a pittance once in India..After it was known it helps Diabetes Patients,it is the costiliest vegetable in India today.A small varirty of this veg is more in demand in South India.

    We did a Research feeding the seeds of this vegetables with kernel of seeds of mango,Jambhu,leaves of Gudmaar and purified Silajit in about 80 NIDDM Diabetes Mellitus patients with an equal number of controls and have a published a paper in the Journal of Research in Ayurveda and Siddha(JRAS-CCRAS-India.)

  5. Karela or bitter gourd. Used in Indian cooking. There is a similar thing from China and other parts of Asia that looks a little smoother and is often called bitter melon.

    They really are bitter, it takes a little getting used to. My wife is from India and we cook it sometimes. I like it, but I didn't like it the first time I tasted it.

    Some people say there are good for controlling cholesterol, blood sugar, and they may have some other medicinal values. I'm not sure if that's true; it's just some things I heard about.

  15. This looks like a bitter melon.  These are used in Indian and Chinese cooking.  I think I have seen them used on the original Iron Chef series.
