So my neighbor has this weed that she can't get rid of (she has tried several methods) and I was wondering if anyone could help out. First, I need an identification because that would help more than anything... So here is it's description: It is a small grass like weed that breaks when you try to pull it, it kind of looks like mini bamboo, and its roots are like a web. So I hope someone can identify it and help us with a removal method. I'll try to get a picture up soon.

Thanks

  1. pour scalding water on it

  2. You are describing Equisetum hyemale or Horsetail, an extremely invasive moisture-loving rush-type plant.  (Do either of you have a neighbor who has some in their yard?  I DO.)  The only way to get rid of it is to dig each tail out with a weeding fork.  There is an interconnected web of roots connecting each tail, so try to get as much root up as possible.  This will be a constant effort.  The only other way to get rid of it would be to dig up the entire area, install some kind of deep barrier between your neighbors' yards, and resoil.  But even that would probably not work...

  3. Sounds like crabgrass. I have tried everything to get rid of mine without just destroying lawn, but still get it! Good luck!

  4. Whatever it is Roundup will get rid of it. It isn't easy to identify without a picture.

  5. The best way is to dig it down past the root and get it out that way. I don't like to use poisons so that's the way I'd do it.
