  1. I don't think it can be explained any better than Tijas just did.  When my can opener doesn't work all the way around the can, my husband will finish it off with one of those.  And you do have to rock it back & forth & keep going around the can like that.

You have an old style can opener.  The small hook-shaped part is designed to hold onto the rolled rib at the top of the can while you press the larger "hook" through the top of the can.  You have to repeat the process of rocking the tool back and forth while turning the can you're opening until the lid comes free.  These openers work great but leave very sharp, jagged edges on both the lid and the can.
