  1. The "big" term is called specialization.

Switches take place after the serve to utilize each player's strengths and minimize weaknesses. Some players are better setters, hitters, blockers, diggers, and serve receivers. Your coach will decide, though drill evaluation, who should play each position.

The middle hitter/blocker is usually a taller girl who can block well and move laterally. She usually blocks all areas along the net. She may also be your first tempo, quick hitter.

Your outsides are your "go to" players who are consistent hitters and passers.

Your setter is usually the best athlete who is like your quarterback. She has fast feet, smart, can deliver the ball to the hitters well, and is a leader.

Defensive players and liberos can read, react, dig, serve receive, etc. They're usually good servers, too (well, everyone should be!).

If your team didn't specialize, you would have to learn six different positions so...in the end, it is easier to specialize. It's just hard to learn in the beginning.

Compare it to softball....you learn to play one position (usually)...you don't rotate after every batter!

Once you understand it, you'll appreciate it, love it, and thrive faster in your position.

    Good luck!

  2. so everyone has a chance to serve :D

  3. there is many postions i for one are a setter cause im really tall.ummmm the setter u always want in the middle so u might want to switch with the other person.so yea.i do it all the time its fun but its very serious too and its important

  4. THERE ARE DIFFERENT ROLES ON THE VB COURT,YOU HAVE THE SETTER,OUTSIDE HITTERS,BLOCKERS,AND DEFENSIVE PLAYERS,FOR EXAMPLE;IF YOU HAVE A PLAYER WHO IS A GREAT OUTSIDE HITTER YOU DONT WANT THEM STUCK IN THE FRONT MIDDLE,SO YOU SWITCH.OR IF THEY ARE A GREAT BLOCKER YOU.  DONT WANT THEM STUCK ON THE FRONT OUTSIDE,SWITCH THEM TO THE MIDDLE.THIS IS DONE IN REAL GAMES.HOPE THIS HELPS

  5. of course you do this in a real game, switching or it's called rotating is so the people who are good at setting can be the setters at all times, and the people who are middle left and right side hitters can hit from their normal spots so that the good people play what they are good at so you have a better chance of winning.

  6. Yes! Switching happens all the time in volleyball. Its  to use the players strengths to their fullest potential.

Here is an example. assume you are a 6' 2" tall girl, with a killer spike, a high reach on blocking. But you are slow in moving and can't pass well. You start of in Left Front.

    1) Its likely you will "switch" to Middle front" because of your strengths in your height, hitting and blocking.

    2) However when you get into the back row, you are NOT likely gonna be switching to center back, because that position requires a good passer and someone that moves quick. Just hope you don't get sub out...hehe. Good Luck.
