My baby is only 5 days old and has had a yellow discharge coming from her eyes whenever she wakes up. Could she already have an eye infection or is this normal?

  1. my son had the same thing and the doctor said it was a clogged tear duct and unless the white part is red then it is not an infection.  they said it would open up on its own by 6 months but he is 7 months and it is still leaky so i am wondering if it is not allergies because he has been sneezing and i have bad allergies.  i am going to ask his doctor about it again

  2. Sounds like a clogged tear duct. My son had the same thing. His pedi told me this: WASH YOUR HANDS FIRST {If you are breastfeeding} And I know it sounds bizarre but, squirt some breast milk in her eye. Just a little. Because of all the natural antibiotics it will help. Then {or if your not breastfeeding} take a warm, not hot, wash cloth and lightly cover the blocked duct. Wait a few minutes and lightly massage in a clockwise circle. I did this for about three days three or four times a day. I saw results on day two. Keep it up for about a week once all symptoms have gone and it should take care of it. As long as the white is not red, it isn't an infection. Talk to her pedi as well. A clogged tear duct isn't a real problem until they are a year and older. Good luck!

  3. My son had that also. It looks bad and sometimes when he woke up it was soo goopy he couldn't open his eyes! It was a clogged tear duct and the doc told me to massage the corner of his eyes near the bridge of his nose down with either my finger or a q tip. I found, what also helped was to get a warm wash cloth and hold it over his eyes for a moment and then wipe away the crusties. she'll be mad b/c of the cloth over her eyes but she'll get over it. I'd still call the doc just in case. It could be infected? Make sure it's not red or inflamed. Good Luck.

  4. anytime your dealing with a newborn call your doctor!!!!!

if this were a 6mth old i might say wait til monday, but this is a newborn so you really should call the doc or go to the er, could be nothin but better be safe than sorry

Could be a clogged tear duct my son had one that had to be opened when her turned one, but it is not diagnosed so i would call the doc, as a nursing student if you called our office i would say bring him in we need to look
