  1. San Juan is a city in Puorto Rico

  2. Mexico is a Catholic country, with a lot of unique religious traditions. San Juan means Saint John, and tierrita means dirt. It's probably dirt from some place where a saint lived or that a group of people consider holy. You don't eat it, it's a keepsake that's kept in houses, like a little blottle of holy water. Some people believe that having that kind of keepsakes and praying to a certain Saint can bring good things to a family, heal the sick, etc.

Look at this website in Spanish, it mentions tierrita de San Juan, from San Juan de Los Lagos, Jalisco, where there's an image of the Virgin Mary that people believe miraculous:

  3. for sure this is the best answer you wll get, since it is the fact.

I don't know if you are catholic.

"tierrita de san juan" means "dirt from San Juan". There is a small city located in Jalisco state named San Juan de los Lagos, in that city there is a Cathedral (main catholic church, head of the "diocesis") in wich there is an image of Virgin Maria (in the "dress" of La Candelaria) wich is very famous in Mexico to ask for miracles; whole year there are many(really many) pilgrins ("peregrinos", we call them "sanjuaneros") going to the cathedral from all Mexico, specially close to february 2, the party of La Candelaria. The people call her (the Virgin) "virgencita de San Juan".

Well, inside the cathedral there is one "pozo" (sorry I don't remember the english word: "pozo" is a hole in the ground to take water from underground), now dried, from it and around it the people takes dirt to get it with them.

Many people actually eats it, because they think it can aliviate their problems, or they think it has some "miracle power" or something like that.

I don't believe anything of that; yes, I am catholic, but not a fanatic or supersticious.

You must understand that in Mexico there is many  people who belivies strange things. They are good people (mostly), but kind of fanatic.
