What is time in comparison to the universe? What I mean by that is, if you went back however many trillions of millenniums would the universe just appear from nothing, or is it just a continuous cycle with no beginning or end? And if that is true, how is it true? How can something start without a beginning?

  1. I feel that the answer to this question is of astrophysical nature rather than philosophy. So here is the link to an article about M-Theory and Super String Theory.

  2. The question is supremely baffling. There appear to be only two possible answers, i.e., there was a beginning or there was not; neither of these possibilities, however, appear logically possible.

  3. It's possible that it always has been and will be,time is a man-made thing. The universe is much more complex to be measured in terms of time.Could be,that the universe was born you could call that a beginning or start.

  4. Whenever Einstein formed his theory of Relativity it was the start of the "theoretical" answer to this question.    In his equations, it was found that the universe was constantly increasing in size, and if this is true, then it must have at one point been really really really really really small.

The moment that this small thing started to expand is known as the "Big Bang"

The "Big Bang" is the scientific explanation for how the universe started, but this of course raised more questions.

Like what was before the big bang?

To answer your question, scientists think that this is how our universe began, it isn't a continuous cycle according to them.

  6. Thats the 100 million dollar question!  No one knows for sure.

Look at it this way:  If you could go back and observe the universe BEFORE it began, that would be impossible.  This is because time did not exist before the begining of the universe.  Time didn't begin until the universe came into existence.

Scientists currently believe the universe was created from a singularity which "exploded" (Big Bang) to create the universe.  Its impossible, from today's scientific research and knowledge, to get data from BEFORE the singularity exploded.

  7. good question. i'd probably say the latter. after the death of a galaxy, the matter either disperses or collapses inward. but we know that gasses make up much of the matter in the universe and gas is the evaporation stage of matter.

I used to think about this when i was younger, but more in a religious way. If God promises us "eternal life"...wouldn't one get tired of living eternally? But technically thats what the universe is doing.

as far as time comparison, lets say for our galaxy we are in the month of june and the month of june lasts 3000years. but now we are approaching the month of july which will last another 3000ish years. how many years then will our galaxy cycle through?

    food for thought.

  8. Existence cannot ever have "not existed." It is a contradiction in terms. Even if you say that God created matter, heaven and earth, god existed; therefore god did not create existence.

Existence is defined by naturalists as a self-sufficient primary not in need of the supernatural for its presence nor its natural laws.

Existence has always existed; but has this present universe always existed? Probably not. Man cannot fathom "infinite time." There could have been billions or trillions of universes before this one.

But they all existed in existence; they could not have existed in non-existence. Therefore, existence has always existed, and the material form of it is ever changing.

  9. I guess that time is the universe...I believe that it did have a begining  and eventually will have an end, as does everything... Its true to say that its subjective. This question sort of correlates to the good old question: Which came first the Chicken or the egg? We dont always know exactly how the cycle works, But as i said before everything does have a beggining and an end.

Sorry, i just read right now you wanted opinions.. hahah... oh well..
