  1. Mileage on any car isn't an issue. Just buy a cheap car on it's merits - does the engine look & sound OK? Is it leaking oil or burning it? Is it overheating or losing water?

So many cars are 'clocked', looking at the mileage is completely irrelevant - I'd rather buy a genuine 200,000 miler than a suspiciously low miler that looked in worse condition.

My brother's BMW has done over 200,000 miles, looks & runs like new.

I had an Austin Montego that did 265,000 with no problems at all. And they were c**p!

  2. A good guide for mileage is to allow 10,000 - 12,000 Miles per year.

Despite what people say, Volkswagon are NOT producing cars as good as they did 20 years ago.Do not buy if there is no service history. Also ask for proof that the cam belt was replaced at the correct time / mileage. ( If this breaks - bang - you will be faced with a very expensive engine rebuild !! ) Good Luck  !!  Ronni

  3. Service history is the answer. If the car has been regularly serviced at the correct intervals you are half way there. High mileage, especially on motorways (a rep's car) equals low wear as there are fewer gear changes, braking and steering compared with city use. Stop start motoring causes the greatest wear as there are frequent warm ups which is wear inducing. Any VW/ Audi/ Skoda/Seat (VAG group) should top 150,000 miles easily if looked after, diesels 200,000 miles.

  4. hi there i have a polo 00 im selling at the mo there a great car it was my first car i just had to replace the clutch theres 77k on it but still good as new clean

  5. Average mileage is about 12-15thousand miles per year of the car.

  6. NO car runs forever!  The way to run it to high mileages though is to service it meticulously at the recommended intervals and only use good quality oil,  But, high mileage can still be an issue! It is not just the engine that wears, gearboxes wear, suspension wears, brakes wear etc. I have seen many cars with healthy 200,000m engines that had totally worn suspension, inoperative handbrakes, pulling brakes etc.

Plus a high mileage may be less significant than you imagine - a car that spends its life on the motorways in the hands of a driver who sticks to the speed limits can be mechanically better at 200,000 than a 60,000m car that spends all its life doing stop/start city driving. A car that has spent its working life on flat roads such as found in Norfolk and Lincolnshire will be less worn than a car with similar mileage operating in hilly areas like north Wales, Yorkshire, cumbria etc.

  7. buying a second hand vw at high millage shouldn't be a problem if the car has a Full service history and frequent oil changes.

when looking at the car check for signs of excessive smoke or abnormal Knocks, whistles sounds of failed head gasket, also the condition of the Cam Belt.

My tip if the car doesn't have a full service history leave it alone, as it could have something to hide.
