I am in the market for a new refrigerator and I have a non negotiable amount of space. I was wondering if anyone can fill me in on the total amount of space needed so I will be able to open both doors on a side by side refrigerator. What is the average total width with doors open (including and excluding handles) of a side by side, and anything else I may need to know about these refrigerators.

  1. Refrigerators come in a variety of sizes.  Starting at 30 in across up to 48.   Go to ge.com and check them out.  In the specification section the width of fridge and the clearance need for doors are given

  2. The best thing to do would be to measure the space you have to work with - Height, Width and Depth... You will want to give those measurements to your sales associate and they should find a fridge that fits....

The amount of space needed when the doors open depends on the fridge since there are many types, SxS (French Door) , French Door w/ bottom freezer , Frnch w/ double bttm freezer, Top Freezer... etc...  and keep in mind different units are just made different in general. I work for  Sears so I can tell you it is highly important to measure before you purchase!!!
