How could the writing style be described? not in adjectives such as excellent, more about the tone, etc.

I read the book "The Girl with the Pearl Earring" awhile ago and found it a really fascinating story.  It's told in the first person from the perspective of the girl in the painting.  She is young and subservient to Vermeer and his family so she tells her story from her menial position although, from her point of view, she sees herself as an important enough person in the grand scheme of things in her world.  I think that she is somewhat in love with the artist but also intimidated a bit, not entirely; she recognizes that he has feelings for her, too, I think.  I hope that the preceding is helpful to you...
